Mugaya Coffee Factory was established in 1975, and is operated by the Mutira Farmers’ Cooperative Society (F.C.S.), which has 1032 contributing smallholder members. The average member has a farm of about half a hectare in size, and grows banana and corn, as well as macadamia trees for shade over the coffee.

The member farmers deliver their coffee in cherry to the factory where it is sorted, de-pulped, and fermented underwater for 16-24 hours before being washed three times. The coffee is dried on raised drying tables.
