Jose Ignacio Gomez

This week we are going to Colombia to visit José Ignacio Gómez. His father was a lifelong coffee producer, and from a young age, José remembers helping him on his farm; he learned so much about coffee production.

In 2002, looking to test himself, he purchased a farm called El Paraiso and began producing coffee independently. He started producing conventional coffees, but after a while, he felt he needed a more significant challenge and one with greater rewards; this sparked José’s interest in the idea of producing speciality coffee.

Not only did José begin learning about the production side of things, but he also learned how to cup and analyze his coffee, trying to understand how changes on the farm would affect his coffee profile.

After starting to produce speciality coffee, José founded the Cooperativa de Cafés Especiales de Nariño with some other quality-focused regional producers, the idea being that the Cooperative would help its members find a market for their outstanding coffees. José’s involvement with the cooperative, as well as his dedication to the farm, has led him to make a success of his speciality coffee venture. He understands that producing great quality coffee is only the first step and finding the right buyer is just as important.

We are very excited to share this coffee with you!
