Martin Chirino Java

A delightful example of the Java variety grown in Bolivian terroir, this coffee starts out with beautiful floral notes which flow into black tea with a squeeze of lemon. Raisin quickly follows accompanied by brown sugar which makes us think of fruit cake.

Martin lives on his small 3 hectare farm in the colonia of Copacabana. A colonia is a small village in Bolivia - normally there's about 20 or 30 people living there with a school, a church and very little else. Copacabana is near Caranavi and this colonia is home to Gregorio Paye of Vulcan Del Tigre too. In fact, the two farms adjoin with a valley marking the edge between them.

Don Martin has worked in coffee for over 40 years, and has owned land for about half of that time. He's passed on his enthusiasm for coffee to his 4 children, who all work in coffee. For the last 8 years he has been part of the Sol De La Mañana program, which is run by the Rodriguez family. Over those 8 years, he's learnt and developed his approach to farming. Nearby are other farms managed in the traditional style, against which his contrasts with its neat layout, methodical pruning and vigorous coffee plants.
