The story of Moccamaster begins in the Netherlands in 1964, when Dutch industrial engineer Gerard-Clement Smit founded Technivorm. Originally focused on manufacturing step ladders and shelving systems, Smit’s passion for innovation and coffee soon led him to develop a revolutionary home coffee grinder in 1965. This grinder, designed to prevent heat buildup and preserve flavour, caught the attention of Dutch coffee giant Douwe Egberts. Their collaboration inspired Smit to take on a new challenge: creating a home coffee brewer that could match the quality of commercial machines. After years of development, the first Moccamaster brewer was introduced in 1969, quickly gaining acclaim for its precision and craftsmanship.
By the mid-1970s, Moccamaster had become a staple in homes and cafés across Europe, particularly in Scandinavia, where coffee culture thrives. The launch of the iconic KB 741 model in 1976 solidified Moccamaster’s reputation among specialty coffee drinkers for its consistent brewing temperature, elegant design, and long-lasting build. Today, every Moccamaster is still handmade in the Netherlands, reflecting the brand’s enduring commitment to quality and sustainability. With over 10 million units sold worldwide, Moccamaster remains a beloved choice for those who value clarity, balance, and craftsmanship in every cup
